In Like Quince
RoveDaily celebrity dandy Devon Quince reports from the Toronto Film Festival.
Well, here I am, at the end of a long week lapping it up with the stars in downtown Toronto. I bought a massive overcoat with a giant fur collar so I'd look the part, but it turns out its not very cold here; apparently Sundance is the festival where it snows and they all wear the furry jackets. Not to worry though, I had tickets to all the big premieres and press conferences with the stars- I couldn't wait to get started. Here's what happened:
RENDITION
Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon. Dir: Gavin Hood.
An interesting sort of a moody picture about a CIA analyst who sees some bad doings. Unfortunately I fell asleep pretty early on as I only landed two days before and was still pretty jet lagged. Couldn't get my sleeping pills right. Poor old John Stamos- everyone thought he was drunk but I think I know just how he felt.
I was well and truly awake however, at the press conference with Jake and Reese. Jake was so cute in his tuxedo, so I couldn't resist but try to bring him down a peg.
DQ: Jake. Devon Quince, Australia. I just wanted to ask, how did it feel to be Heath Ledger's bitch in Brokeback Mountain?
Sadly no response, but I think he got the joke. The eats afterwards were first class.
THE BRAVE ONE
Stars: Jodie Foster, Terence Howard. Dir: Neil Jordan.
A bit grim for my liking. Jodie is on a revenge mission after a brutal attack. Good but, you know... depressing.
In the press conference I asked Terence Howard about the Benicio Del Toro impression he's been doing. Amazing that it's got him so many big roles (and an Oscar nomination)- all from a lame impression! Talk about winning the lottery. I don't think he heard me.
But I made sure I asked Neil Jordan about his most famous work.
DQ: Neil, in reference to The Crying Game, I just wanted to ask you about that penis- do you still have it?
NJ: Yes.
What a scoop!
THE GIRL IN THE PARK
Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Kate Bosworth. Dir: David Auburn.
Another grimmy about a woman who lost her child. I walked out and got some food so I was fresh for the Q&A afterwards.
Sigourney was up first.
DQ: Hello Ms. Weaver. Did you know I saw your cans in Half Moon Street?
SW: Well, I hope you liked them.
Big laughs. I was a hit.
DQ: I did. But it's good you don't get them out in this film, your bit old for that now- a pity you didn't though Kate...
No laughter this time and unfortunately I was asked to leave. I think the sleeping pills are still clouding my judgement.
CASSANDRA'S DREAM
Stars: Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell. Dir: Woody Allen.
A real cracker about two brothers who turn to crime and then become enemies. I loved it.
Unfortunately at the press conference, journalists were only allowed to submit three questions each, to be asked by the moderator.
For Colin Farrell I wrote: "Don't you think wearing two earrings is a bit gay?"
For Ewan I said: "I loved The Island, but was a bit disappointed he didn't get to squire Scarlet Johansson. Was he?"
For Woody I just scrawled something about his funeral preparations. Sadly none were put to the trio. Bummer.
INTO THE WILD Stars: William Hurt, Vince Vaughn. Dir: Sean Penn.
Missed this one because I was watching one of those golden statues that are real men. Just terrific. Everything is happening in this town right now- it's off tha hook!.
But as luck would have it I bumped into William Hurt at the after party. I told him how much I loved him in The Big Chill, which he was very nice about. I asked him if Sean Penn ever threw the cameras at him after a bad take. He laughed, which was nice, and bought me a beer. But when I said I was serious about the camera thing, he walked away.
Overall a sensational week. Sure I would have preferred to go to Venice, or Cannes! I would have loved to have seen Jerry Seinfeld in that hilarious bee costume. But Toronto was, fine.
I can't wait to come back to Toronto for RoveDaily next year, although hopefully it will be held in Cannes.
